After School Enrichment Program

ASPIRA of New York

Since 1961, ASPIRA of New York has been dedicated to serving New York City youth and their families, providing opportunities that would otherwise not be available to them, and serving as an effective advocate, fighting to improve education in the Puerto Rican and Latino communities. In the 58 years since it was organized by a group of concerned community leaders led by Dr. Antonia Pantoja - a 1996 Presidential Medal of Freedom Awardee - ASPIRA of NEw York has served thoughts of NEw York City youth, parents, schools, and other community based agencies, establishing a record of providing high quality, comprehensive programs and services.

The goal of the ASPIRA Afterschool Program at P.S. 595 is to ensure the program is exciting and rewarding for our parents and our students. ASPIRA of New York, Inc. has been working hand in hand with New York City youth and schools for over 58 years and has established itself as one of the premier Latino agencies in the United States.

The strong collaboration with the school administration and their highly committed professional staff will provide highly educational STEAM activities, academic enrichment, leadership development, parental involvement, and community service projects to the children.

Programs being offered

Art Space Grant – ArtSPACE grants support schools with a demonstrated commitment to strong arts education programs to apply for facility, material and resource support to create or refurbish their performing and visual arts spaces. ArtSPACE grants enable schools to move closer to the goals outlined in the NYC Department of Education’s  Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts, the New York State Instructional Requirements for the Arts and a sequential arts program for students in grades Pre-K-12.

Learn to Grow NYC - A public/private partnership between GrowNYC, the Mayor’s Office to Advance New York City, and GreenThumb, NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, Grow to Learn was created to inspire, create and maintain gardens in every public school in New York City. Offering mini-grants, free materials and technical expertise to registered gardens, Grow to Learn helps school gardeners create gardens that can be utilized as outdoor classrooms and indoor living labs.

Writing/Reading Workshops - Workshops focused on the Units of Reading and Writing will expose parents to the Rubrics and Exemplars of Student Writing and support parent understanding of NGLS and student learning outcomes.

Happy Healthy Latina – This program teaches parents students the basics of cooking techniques as well as introducing them to traditional flavors and recipes passed down through generations while using healthy, whole foods harvested with participants in the farm.

NYU Dentistry- In order to ensure our families have access to healthcare regardless of economic or immigration status; we have partnered with the NYU Dentistry to be able to come to our school site. P.S. 595 students are able to be seen by the NYU Dentistry residential staff free of charge.

Materials for the Arts-  Materials for the Arts is New York City’s largest creative reuse center dedicated to supporting arts and cultural organizations. A program of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs with support from the Department of Education and Friends of Materials for the Arts, in 2018, MFTA collected 1.7 million pounds of reusable materials from businesses and individuals across the five boroughs. These items were made available, free of charge, to nonprofits with arts programming as well as New York City public schools and City agencies. Through the materials of the arts we are able to bring an art program to our students here at P.S. 595. They are able to be as creative as they want with the materials we acquire.
